"El Tule" is said to be the largest tree in the world.  It has been providing shade and inspiration to locals and travelers since about 6 B.C.  You'll find it roughly 20 km east of Oaxaca city.  The local kids use mirrors to spotlight various figures in the trunk and branches.  It's worth stopping here on your way to Mitla.
